{March 28, 2014}   Daily Prompt: Singing the Blues

The cats know when I need them...

The cats know when I need them…

This prompt is timely. I am having one of those days today when I feel like a cartoon character hanging off the cliff by that one skinny little branch…

I usually have to do a LOT of different things to get out of it. A combination of activities usually does the trick.

My number one tactic is to pet and play with my cats. They always know when I need them.

Another tool is to read uplifting materials…and yet sometimes the opposite helps: singing the “blues” as the title says. I listen to sad music, cry and get it out of my system. A couple of songs that are guaranteed to make me cry: “Sparrow” by Simon & Garfunkel or Lyle Lovett singing “Texas Trilogy.” (Below is the original version…couldn’t find a YouTube video of Lyle Lovett performing it. The last song in the trilogy, Bosque County Romance, is the one that sets me off.) A sad movie can do the trick as well.

Walking is always good or yoga, or meditation using a positive message like “God loves me” or “Serenity” or “Abundance” can help.

Writing about it: blogging and knowing that others feel the same makes me feel less alone. Writing/reading a gratitude list. I still haven’t completed the whole alphabet but I work on it periodically.

Sometimes looking at old pictures of happier times can make me smile. Taking new pictures is sure to get my attention off of myself and my life and onto an activity I enjoy.

Finally, just going about my day and being present during simple tasks can sweep the blues away and allow me to toss them in the bucket and look forward to tomorrow.

It IS Friday after all. 🙂

It’s good that we have our babies to cheer us up Sued. Don’t feel alone. I’ve been feeling like this too since yesterday. I love to play sad music then too and to cry it out. As they say : Tears cleans the soul. Guess my soul needs a lot of clearing up. LOL! But I have to do it when I am alone because hubby and the boys and even Simba gets very upset when I cry. Yesterday I kept listening to my favourite song of Pharrel Williams – Happy. That song does cheer me up. Hang in there hon. You’re not alone. 😀 ♥ Big Hugs ♥

Sonel, thanks for your thoughtful and empathetic comment. I’ve been working too much and not having enough fun (or time to write my blog). It seems it will continue for the near future, but I do have a vacation day coming up!
That song “Happy” definitely is an upbeat one!

I’ve noticed that hon and I completely understand. Life does get in the way sometimes and it’s sad because I do love your posts and it’s always great to hear from you. Enjoy the vacation and have a good time. Glad you like the song too. 😀 ♥ Hugs ♥

Great words, thoughts, and emotions.

I just wrote on another favorite blogger’s post that I didn’t have the courage? emotional ability? strength? to write on this topic, although when I first read the challenge I thought “here’s one I should respond to.”

Reading of your ways to work through the blues is validating, as these actions help me so much too. Especially music and movies! Thank you!

(My canine family member is, sometimes, the saving moment of an otherwise forgettable day. My feline family members were too, during their too-short time here on earth. How many tears can their fur absorb?!)

I hope your Friday was a good one, and your weekend is even better!

Cindi,
Thanks for your lovely comment. Glad we can validate each other! 🙂 I almost didn’t write on it either because it hit too close to home and I know that not many people want to read “unhappy” topics.
I have just been working too much lately to enjoy the things that make me happy. I’m taking a vacation day next week…I hope that helps!
Hope you have a great weekend too!
