This fall I returned to the college classroom as an English teacher. I work for a well-respected and successful community college in a fairly small southern town that is also home to two major universities. It’s a great little town that sometimes acts all big and grown because in addition to the legion of academics and students who live here, we are the state capital; we have lots of beautiful parks, annual festivals, shopping, restaurants, and outdoor activities. When you look out upon this gorgeous municipality from the slick open air lounge at the top of a downtown hotel you see trees far and wide. Not skyscrapers and interstates, but a carpet of green. And if you look south from that vantage point, nestled beneath a canopy of live oaks is a largely disadvantaged area of town populated with poor, mostly African American community members.
